The first words that come to mind when thinking about Serious Mass by Optimum Nutrition are GO BIG OR GO HOME. Everything about Serious Mass is BIG: from the package to the serving size to the content. Serious Mass is one of two weight gainer supplements by Optimum Nutrition, the other being Pro Complex. It comes in as our #4 weight gainer in 2014, and it is a go-to for many people.
Serious Mass is packed with 1250 calories, 252g of carbs, 50g protein per serving in 334g/serving! Yes, you read that right, that’s per serving folks. Those portions are massive even compared with other leading weight gainers. You’ll notice it has a 5:1 carb to protein ratio, which means you are getting a looot of carbs. Again, if your goal is to put on weight quickly and you don’t mind the added carbs, this is a non-issue. For those looking for a little more protein, you can add some protein to your mix.
This gainer is ideal for ectomorphs who struggle putting or keeping on weight. It’s also great for serious hardgainers who are looking to bulk and simply can’t find enough calories throughout the day. If you are strength training or in a bulk stage, Serious Mass is really one of the best options that are available.
Taste & Mixability
Serious Mass is available in 4 flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, Banana, and Strawberry. Chocolate is always a great option with ON products, and banana is good as well. With ON products, you’re always going to get a pretty good tasting product, but we’d recommend those two flavors.
Due to the ungodly serving size, a blender really comes in handy to mix up the powder. We found that a normal shaker bottle left some clumps with the full 2 scoops.
I have tried so many different mass gainers and this is really the only one I keep coming back to. This stuff doesn’t mix very well and when you look at the facts, it’s not as good as ON’s Pro Gainer. This stuff is 1250 calories and 50g of protein per serving. A serving has to be made in two shaker cups. Pro Gainer is 650 calories and 60g of protein per serving and fits into one shaker cup. You will get a little more carbs with the Serious Mass, but it’s not worth it for the taste and consistency. – DerekHartinger

- Protein (50g) (Whey Protein Concentrate, Calcium Caseinate, Egg Albumen, Sweet Dairy Whey): contains combination of quality, fast-acting and slower-acting proteins. Tip: If you cut your dosage in half, you may want to add some more protein to each serving
- Carbs (252g): the main carb source in Serious Mass is maltodextrin, which is basically sugar. Maltodextrin is a fast absorbing carb source which will help facilitate weight gain
- Creatine (1g): The creatine dosage is really minimal here, so if you want creatine, you’ll most likely need to take some more creatine separately
- Glutamine and Glutamine Peptides: aids in protein metabolism, cell volumization, and anti-catabolism
Serious Mass Side Effects
The most common side effect that users report from Serious Mass is feeling bloated. This is in part due to the enormous serving size with a scooper more fit for a Tide box than a supplement tub.
As with all other workout supplements, you should accompany your intake with proper nutrition and an exercise regimen. If used correctly, Serious Mass will result in increased muscle mass. Without proper nutrition and a workout plan, you’ll put on weight all right, but it will probably go straight to your gut.
In terms of value, you need to consider your frame of reference. Following the recommended dosage of 2 scoops means that this is a fairly expensive weight gainer. On the other hand, sticking to one scoop doubles the value. Considering most of you will probably use 1 scoop, we think Serious Mass offers great value for what it delivers.
One thing to remember is that with weight gainers, you really are paying for the protein, not the carbs. In other words, the protein is where the money’s at, so really think about if you want a gainer with more protein or less carbs.
Serious Mass is available in 4 different sizes: 3 lbs, 6 lbs, 12 lbs, and 18 lbs. Obviously, the bigger you go, the better value you get, but unless you want a ginormous bag of this stuff hanging out in your living room, we suggest you stick with the 12 lbs bags.
